TAX Junk Food to Cut Obesity
Researchers estimate an 18% tax on pizza and soda can reduce the average U.S. adult's weight by 5 pounds/per year. 
Taxing was suggested as a weapon in the fight against obesity, which costs the U.S. an estimated $147 billion a year in health costs.

Fact or Fiction?

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, the two most effective ways to limit children's consumption of unhealthy foods is to restrict their advertising and remove them from schools.
Many advocacy groups have expressed similar sentiments, urging the government to enact similar legislation to restrict junk food advertising.  Since obesity rates are spiraling out of control, they believe that restrictions will help to improve childhood health.
The health ministry said that ads for foods high in fat, sugar, & salt, will be limited during the prime time TV hours of 5-7pm and during any kid's programming.  The limits are on foods like hamburgers, instant noodles, pizza and desserts like chocolate and ice cream.Many child advocacy groups have been calling for limitations on junk food advertising for years, citing the statistic that 20% of children in the country are overweight.  Last year, the health ministry banned junk food sales at schools and their surrounding neighborhoods.
The goal of the ban is to encourage food manufacturers to improve the nutritional quality of their products.  Rather than simply enact burdensome restrictions, the health ministry is hoping that when all is said and done, consumers will have healthier options available to them as well as be more informed about what they are purchasing.
Fact or fiction?  Both.  Everything in this TIP is fact.  Too bad it is referring to South Korea and not the United States!!!.

A limit on advertising may help to curb the amount of junk food children eat but it will not remove it from grocery store shelves.  But, both our stories this week, while likely to face  considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers, could prove to be important lifestyle strategies that address overconsumption, help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among adults and insure the health of our children!
